Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, the parents of Mary, both celebrate their feast day on July 26. Saint Anne is patron saint of miners, old clothes dealers, seamstresses, lace workers, housekeepers, carpenters, turners, cabinetmakers, stablemen, and broommakers, and is invoked against poverty and to find lost objects. Whew! But I guess a busy saint is a happy saint.
I wish this were my birthday. While I was growing up, the only famous person who shared my birthday was Lawrence Welk. Lawrence Welk! Anyway, today was the birthday of George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), George Catlin (1796-1872), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), and Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999). Still celebrating: Blake Edwards (79), Helen Mirren (55), Kevin Spacey (42), and Mick Jagger (58).

The Chincoteague Pony Penning will be running from July 30 to August 1 this year (2003). Ponies swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island, Virginia. For anyone who was a fan of Misty of Chincoteague and the rest of island-native Marguerite Henry's series on these little equines, being one of the estimated 50,000 onlookers would be a great thrill but not as great as getting to buy one of the 50 or 60 ponies that will be culled from the island's herd, which is limited to 150. Better yet, how about being the winner of the first young pony (King or Queen Neptune) to stumble up on the Chincoteague shore after the swim?
If you can't be there to see it live, watch at home via the Ponycam.
Tthe remaining youngsters will be auctioned for about $1000 to $6000 each, from what I can determine. The ponies are all officially the property of the Chincoteague Fire Department and the proceeds from the auction go to support that organization.
